Are you spending some time in the ACT and fancy a bet or two? This review of Casino Canberra’s facilities will give you an idea on where to go.
Canberra Casino is located at 21 Binara Street in Canberra, Australia’s capital territory. It is in the heart of the central business district of Canberra. It is the first and only Casino that is operating in the territory of Canberra.
The Casino Canberra opened in November 1992 at a temporary location of the National Convention Centre and later the permanent casino opened in July 1994. An interesting piece of trivia is that the former prime minister Bob Hawke was one of the first people to place a bet in roulette with a golden ball at the temporary casino.
Comparatively to other Australian casinos, the Canberra casino is much smaller. It doesn’t have any hotel accommodation, auditoriums, theatres or retail outlets. It is also in a unique position of being the only Australian casino that is not licenced to operate poker machines. This is because of lobbying from Canberra’s clubs and their fear of losing revenue.
The casino was acquired by the Acquis group in 2014. The Acquis group is controlled by Hong Kong billionaire Tony Fung.
Recently, an announcement by the Acquis group was made about a $330 million dollar rebuild of the Canberra Casino. This included two new boutique hotels, resort style entertainment, retail and dining precinct. This however would depend on whether the licensing restrictions on poker machines are removed.
The proposed rebuild of the casino includes: a new street connection connecting the new precinct with the cbd, new casino and entertainment resort, new food and beverage and forecourt, expanded convention centre, six star luxury accommodation, and a new five star boutique hotel.
The Canberra Casino has 39 gaming tables and no gaming machines. It offers the following table games:
- Pai Gow
- Rapid Roulette
- Money Wheel
- Canberra Poker
Tournaments – The Canberra Casino holds Blackjack tournaments and poker tournaments from time to time. Check their website for details on their scheduled dates.
There is also a poker lounge and sports lounge with sports betting facilities.
The Canberra Casino has a gaming rewards club called the “Senator’s Club”. You are able to earn points and redeem them for parking, complimentary dining, complimentary hotel accommodation, free play and tournament and promotion invitations.
